People Practices


Mastek's biggest asset is its people. Every individual is important and is inspired to produce extraordinary results. The company's philosophy and HR policies aim at creating high levels of engagement and commitment, not only to realise business aims but to contribute to the larger social good as well.



Our people-related practices have been assessed at P-CMM Level 3. In fact, Mastek was the first software company to be assessed at both P-CMM Level 3 and Software CMM level 5.



Our HR initiatives have led to high levels of empowerment and commitment among employees. The initiatives include:
  • A strong thrust on living out the company's vision and values, creating a culture that is built on the edifice of lasting relationships to create value for all stakeholders
  • Ongoing employee communications that enable individuals across functions and levels to achieve shared goals
  • Regular extracurricular activities that increase employee involvement and create a spirit of fun and bonding at the workplace
  • Reward and recognition programmes that reinforce both values and results
  • Commitment to leadership development and training
  • Role modelling by senior management
Vision and Values in Action



Mastek cherishes its vision and its values. We believe that any good company should create an open atmosphere, have outstanding teamwork, respect individuals, see that employees take pride in their work, build long-term relationships, ensure customer intimacy and have a commitment to results. Our HR policies and procedures are based on these values.

These values are communicated to our employees in various ways. Like for instance, the chairman conducts a session on values during the induction programme for new employees. Newcomers are briefed on how they can put these values into practice. Mastek's intranet also has information on these values.

Employee Feedback



We value what our employees think about the organisation. Mastek recently conducted a Mastekeer Satisfaction Survey whose objectives were:
  • To measure the satisfaction levels of all employees
  • To gather opinions on various factors that determine Mastekeer satisfaction
  • To evolve and update employee-related policies
  • To look into areas of improvement and help employees perform better and achieve their goals
Mastekeers were asked to rate the company on a scale of one to seven, where seven was the maximum score. The high scores that employees gave Mastek on key parameters such as Friends at work, Proud to be a Mastekeer, Belongingness, Work alignment with company values, Opinions matter, Guidance and support, I make a difference and Role clarity are testimony to our commitment to creating lasting relationships and to living out our vision and values.

Extensive Training



Mastek conducts training programmes for its employees on a regular basis to enable them to reach their full potential and serve customers better. These include technical and functional training, skill-building, personality development, cross-cultural training and training in customer service.

Events



Extra-curricular events, in which all employees take part, are an integral part of the Mastek culture. These not only help employees build relationships across functions, departments and hierarchies, they also enable them to share information. These events also reinforce the values of the organization.

One such event is the Monthly Meeting, for which attendance is mandatory. Of course, this is not strictly extra-curricular – it's a great mix of fun and serious work. Senior managers share information about the company and projects and address employees on important issues. On the fun side, newcomers are encouraged to perform skits or dances and introduce themselves. This event reinforces team spirit at the company.

Another event is the annual Run Time, which is a great way for Mastekeers and their families to get together in an informal environment. Mastekeers travel together and stay together overnight at a great location. All employees travel together by train in second class, including the chairman and the peons. And all of them – including the peons and their families -- stay in a five-star resort! The idea is to reinforce the value of respect for the individual.

Recognition and Awards



Mastek has a host of reward and recognition programmes (individual and team awards) that honours performance as well as the right attitudes and values. These include:
  • Attitude awards like `Fire in the Belly' for going the extra mile in work situations, including serving the client
  • Customer Delight Awards for outstanding service to the customer (for both individuals and teams)
  • Customer citations and commendation letters are posted on the Intranet as an example to all Mastekeers
  • Project Managers and other Team Leaders are encouraged to felicitate their teams during the Monthly Meets, at which all Mastekeers are present
