Architecting Business Value for Savi

In the media, we are exposed to several inspiring company slogans and taglines. Broadly, there are two kinds of messages. On the one hand, you have a catchy slogan that doesn’t quite exude meaning. Then there’s a slogan that breathes life into a mission statement.

When Mastek adopted “making a valuable difference”, the Company was committed to creating value for clients, partners, investors and employees. Accordingly, all policies were geared to making Mastek’s unique value proposition deliver.

Mastek strives to offer a high ROI in IT projects for clients. Similarly, the Company aims to provide investors handsome returns. For employees, Mastek is focused at nurturing and making them evolve as individuals and professionals.

In the same vein, Mastek is committed to adding value to Partners. In this regard, we showcase Mastek’s partnership with Savi, the world leader in Supply Chain Management.

Project # 1: Spoornet

Spoornet is South Africa’s equivalent to the Indian Railways. The Company contracted Savi to automate the tracking of its wagons and coaches to enhance freight security.

Mastek partnered with Savi to develop the proprietary Asset Management System (AMS). Having collaborated with Mastek on product development, Savi turned to Mastek for customising AMS to Spoornet’s requirements.

The project was a mammoth exercise with product innovation taking place in Singapore, customisation in Mumbai, testing in USA and implementation in South Africa.

Shailesh Sonalker, Project Manager recalls coordinating activity in the US, “I changed my working hours to be one-on-one with developers during the testing stage.” He would log in around afternoon and call it a day, early in the morning.

Suyash Apte led a team of 10 IT professionals across multiple locations (USA, South Africa, Singapore and Mumbai). He was instrumental in documenting specifications, coordinating with team members situated at different geographical locations in different time zones, generating a knowledge pool with Savi-specific capabilities, suggesting improvements in the Base product and implementing process and software configuration control in a multi-site development environment.

Mastek added incremental value by going beyond the brief of the project. The team provided database support, assisted in server management and helped frame the requirements definition.

The solution facilitated ‘authenticity of data’ and enabled Spoornet to locate wagons in the network with pinpoint accuracy.

Vishal Zadoo, programmer, part of the development and implementation team was happy with the client’s reaction and relieved having accomplished the task. “It was a challenging assignment from a SI perspective involving 7 parties.”

Project # 2: Envirotainer

Mastek partnered with Savi on a turnkey project to customise Envirotainer, a container management system. The solution involved tracking containers through the product life cycle in the shipping industry.

The Mastek team worked closely with Savi in Singapore to integrate Envirotainer’s system into Savi’s AMS.

During the project, Mastek initiated Savi into CMM Level 5 processes for defect tracking. This was a first-time experience for Savi and a learning for the future. Involving a Mastek team member at the specs stage facilitated a better understanding of the solution requirements and a smooth roll out.

Project # 3: EDB-Hutch

Savi collaborated with Mastek on a container management system for EDB-Hutch. The solution developed in Singapore helped track containers and assets in the shipping trade. The project involved integration of AMS and database configuration.

Sanjay Anand, programmer and part of the development team was overawed by his first on-site experience. He felt that the rapport the Mastek team struck with Savi team members contributed a great deal towards the success of the project.

Project # 4: Woolworth

Mastek partnered with Savi to customise AMS for Woolworth, a leading British development store. The solution involved tracking dollies (containers) from the hub to warehouses and vice versa in real time.

The Mastek team researched AMS and gained an in-depth understanding of Woolworth’s requirements. The team developed and tested the solution in Singapore.

Mastek added value by enhancing the business processes. The team went one step further by providing applications support.

The solution enables Woolworth to track goods with pinpoint accuracy through a user-friendly interface. The efficacy of the solution was reinforced when it was awarded the “European Supply Chain Solution award”.

Sabu Poulose, Solutions Architect who was in U.K. was thrilled to see the team’s solution at work from the bay. He remarks, “The feeling can’t be matched.”

Project # 5: China Merchants

Mastek partnered with Savi on a container management system for China Merchants.

The system, developed in Singapore, provides real-time information of containers like dwell time at a location, item visibility within the container, security status of the container as well as inspection and movement history of containers. It also involved an exchange of track and trace B2B messages between CHNET system maintained by China Merchants and TSS (Transport Security System) of Savi.

Mastek was responsible for system requirements, designing, scheduling, coding, implementing and testing the system before delivery to China Merchants.

Savi’s partnership with Mastek has gone from strength to strength. In the space of 2 years, Savi has partnered with Mastek on 12 projects. Which just goes to prove that when a partner delivers substantial value, the sky is the limit to achievement.
