NHS Digital is the trading name of the Health and Social Care Information Centre, which is the national provider of information, data and IT systems for commissioners, analysts and clinicians in health and social care in England​.

The Cancer Waiting Times, CWT, service provides valuable cancer treatment performance metrics to drive service improvements and better patient outcomes.​

The Cancer Waiting Times service is a portal that allows providers to upload performance data and providers, CCGs, Cancer Alliances and Regional Offices to generate performance analytics and benchmarking provided and monitored by the UK Government.​

Working with Mastek​

  • The NHS’ IT leadership set about some key goals: to modernise the legacy EventStore system using AWS cloud native services adhering to the NHS Digital’s cloud strategy.​

The Situation

Need for a comprehensive Cloud-based HCM system to integrate and automate HR processes.

The Amana Group was looking to implement a Cloud-based HCM system to accomplish effective change management on major HR policies and automate the integration of payroll.

This called for a transformation of their HCM systems to integrate core HR operations, recruitment and workforce management processes, absence management records and payroll inputs.

  • Cancer Waiting Time (CWT) is an NHS system that allows NHS providers to submit data on referrals, first outpatient appointments, diagnosis and treatments. 

  • The CWT system has been plagued by its instability and unreliability, mainly due to EventStore getting “hung”, thereby preventing downstream systems from being able to process messages.​

A UK government department has a back-end tidal protection system, built using accurate and reliable data from the UK’s largest network of tidal stations. They need to make this prediction capability available as an API to developers across the UK using a subscription (paid and free) model.

The client is headquartered in New Zealand and invests in natural disaster research, education, and providing insurance to property owners for the damage caused by natural disasters like earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, hydrothermal activity, and tsunamis. They are committed to reducing the impact of natural disasters on people and communities.

We implemented Oracle Cloud HCM with the following modules:

  • Replacement of EventStore by AWS SQS​.
  • Replacement of Grafana & all of its dependent technology products such as Ruby scripts, Graphite, Carbon Time Series Database and Sensu by CloudWatch.

Before implementation, we streamlined and simplified the main HR processes and unified them across four countries where the Amana Group had operations. We also conducted sessions to ensure that all stakeholders were on the same page while testing the solutions helping us to accelerate customer approvals.

Additionally, we adopted the ADOPT methodology (Advisory, Design, Orchestrate, Prepare, and Transition) for Oracle HCM cloud implementation

What we did

We supplied a multidisciplinary team, including architects, service designers and user researchers.

Through a series of targeted technical and service design workshops, we delved into strategic areas that promised significant potential outcomes, as well as those with relatively smaller impact but more straightforward solutions. Throughout the process, we maintained an ongoing feedback loop with the teams, facilitating adjustments and refinements as needed.

We also conducted in-depth user research with commissioners and GP practice managers, data analysis and an expert infrastructure review to understand and map the ‘as is’ ecosystem, and to identify pain points and opportunities. 

We used this baseline to propose three options that address infrastructure issues, user needs and business needs. Our recommendations included an ideal future state as well as transitional models to enable an informed approach to decision-making by the client.
