NHS Digital is the trading name of the Health and Social Care Information Centre, which is the national provider of information, data and IT systems for commissioners, analysts and clinicians in health and social care in England.
The Cancer Waiting Times, CWT, service provides valuable cancer treatment performance metrics to drive service improvements and better patient outcomes.
The Cancer Waiting Times service is a portal that allows providers to upload performance data and providers, CCGs, Cancer Alliances and Regional Offices to generate performance analytics and benchmarking provided and monitored by the UK Government.

- As a trusted AWS partner to the NHS, we retired their legacy system with the scalable solution using AWS cloud native services enabling them to deliver CWT services better.
The Situation
Cancer Waiting Time (CWT) is an NHS system that allows NHS providers to submit data on referrals, first outpatient appointments, diagnosis and treatments.
The CWT system has been plagued by its instability and unreliability, mainly due to EventStore getting “hung”, thereby preventing downstream systems from being able to process messages.
The Solution
- Replacement of EventStore by AWS SQS.
- Replacement of Grafana & all of its dependent technology products such as Ruby scripts, Graphite, Carbon Time Series Database and Sensu by CloudWatch.
